On Wednesday Tuesday, August 29 28, 2007 at 1:13 PM, 8 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 4 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 3 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, LAPD and L.A. Co Engines 83 and 6, all under the direction of Battalion Chief John Buck responded to a Structure Fire at 1761 W. Chandeleur in the San Pedro/White Point area.
The initial report coming into the OCD Dispatch Center was for a reported tree fire. Once Fire Department resources arrived on scene the incident was quickly upgraded to a Structure Fire response. The Incident Commander on scene, reported that a 50 foot by 100 foot section of grass on a hillside, had ignited a large pine tree, thus exposing two single family dwellings. The structure located directly in the path of where the fire started sustained the most severe damage.
With temperatures in the 90's and with a light wind, Fire Department personnel engaged in an aggressive ground and interior structure fire attack to knockdown the fire in approximately 20 minutes. The cause of the mid morning blaze was determined to be sparks from a fence welding operation. The dollar loss to the main fire structure was estimated at $600,000 ($550,000 structure, $50,000 contents). The exposure sustained a loss of $10,000 to the structure only. No injuries were reported.

Looking foward to reading blogs actually written by the "new" PSO's such as Greg Acevedo.
I believe that d'Lisa Davis has the date wrong in the post. Didn't this occur on August 28th, not August 29th?
Kyle,
Thanks for the note. We are humbled that so many people visit (and actually read!) our blog, and are never shy to admit when we make errors. We appreciate you keeping us on our toes.
Your correction is kindly noted, and offered as a 'strikethrough' merely to help those joining this thread understand what we are speaking of.
The error you mention is not uncommon (I've done it myself) - and was likely set in motion by d'Lisa posting an incident from the shift that preceded her 'database registered' tour of duty.
You can read more about some of the challenges we're overcoming in the comments of this recent blog post.
No matter the challenge though, please always let us know how we're doing. With critique comes analysis that moves us toward improvement.
Oh, and I should mention...
Greg Acevedo was a fill-in LAFD representative for the day. He and Pat Marek (who filled in earlier this week) each were Department spokesmen in the early 1980's. Though they have promoted to more important positions within the Department, they were willing to help our office during a staffing shortage. For that, we are grateful.
Again, thanks for the note - and for being an LAFD News & Information blog reader.
Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
Brian Humphrey

When doing a job like this so many of these welders don't believe that a vire watch is necessary and that someone with a garden hose can take care of it. When a welder is under the hood and engaged in hot work he, or she is oblivious to things around them, therefore a firewatch and a helper are alway preffered. Thank God there were no fiore fighter injuries, Home owners insurance will no doubt sue the weldors, hope they carry there own insurance. Steve P
As I read this article, It appears to me that this was a Brush/Grass Fire that burned down a structure rather than just a structure fire. If my memory searves me correctly, LA City has not lost a structure in a Brush/Grass Fire in many years. Maybe an indication of what a critical fire season we are dealing with!
